Critical Thinking, Media Literacy, and Information Literacy Skills in School Libraries

In Bogotá’s schools, physical and digital libraries have become key learning environments for shaping critical, autonomous, and responsible students. More than just places to access information, they now play an essential pedagogical role in developing critical thinking, media literacy, and especially information literacy skills.

In an information-saturated world, knowing how to manage data and sources is crucial. Information literacy involves skills such as locating reliable sources, formulating research questions, evaluating content quality and relevance, organizing information logically, and citing properly to avoid plagiarism. These competencies help students navigate digital environments ethically and critically, detect misinformation, understand media intentions, and build their own knowledge.

Purposeful use of library resources supports critical reading, independent research, and thoughtful reflection. In this way, students don’t just access information — they learn how to analyze and transform it into meaningful learning. This prepares them to face the challenges of today’s world and take part as informed, responsible citizens.
