Crime on Two Wheels: Motorcyclists and Urban Disorder in Bogotá

In Bogotá, many motorcyclists have normalized the illegal use of bike lanes and sidewalks to avoid traffic. While it may seem like a minor offense, this action constitutes a serious breach: it disrupts the rightful use of public space and puts pedestrians and cyclists at risk. Legally, it violates traffic regulations, endangers third parties, and can cause damage to public infrastructure.

Beyond legal definitions, it reflects an ethical transgression — a choice to prioritize personal convenience over collective safety. The situation escalates when citizens who demand respect are met with insults or threats, turning a traffic violation into an act of urban microviolence.

Although punishments exist — such as fines, traffic citations, and vehicle impoundment — enforcement is inconsistent. The lack of visible consequences fosters a sense of impunity, sending a dangerous message: breaking the law carries little to no risk.

This reality exposes the urgent need for stronger civic culture and institutions capable of enforcing public norms. Without them, everyday crime — left unpunished — will continue to erode social trust and peaceful coexistence.
